One of the hardest aspects of designing a game is to balance the game so it presents an adequate challenge to as many players as possible. If the world and the story are different every time, there’s a better chance that players will keep coming back for more. The AI will be able to react to players’ choices and unfurl an entirely different storyline than would have unfolded if the player had taken the other fork in the road. Modern AI procedural-driven content will include not only immersive visual worlds but also storytelling elements. Powerful AI can allow procedural-driven content to much more than a limited palette of terrains and topographical details. ![]() Of course, procedurally-generated content is limited by the AI capabilities of the day. This not only makes it a different gaming experience every time-it also takes some of the burden off the game designers by creating game elements that design themselves. Many games use procedurally-generated content-algorithms that create game elements (like terrain and topography) as the players play. Not every game element is pre-programmed and immutable. By taking different actions, players can cause the game to play out differently each time, making these games infinitely more immersive and “replayable.” 2. With these algorithms, games can create AI-driven opponents that learn and adapt from the player's strategy. Not so with machine-learning algorithms like Cicero. There’s some variability of outcome, but there was little hope of defeating the illusion that players were essentially following a script-predictable, repetitive, same game every time.
